Ti 6Al-4V, or Grade 5 Titanium, is a popular titanium alloy comprised of alpha plus beta alloys; it accounts for half of all titanium utilization around the world. Its popularity is largely due to its numerous advantages.
Essential details
Ti 6Al-4V, or grade 5 titanium, is known as the "workhorse" of titanium alloys and is the most commonly used of all titanium alloys (α+β alloys). It accounts for 50% of the total titanium usage worldwide. Its usability lies in its many benefits.
TC4 can represent most low-temperature titanium alloys, which have high strength and low density, good mechanical properties, excellent toughness and corrosion resistance. Its strength will increase with the decrease of temperature, but its plasticity will not change much. It maintains good ductility and toughness at low temperatures of -196-253°C, avoiding metal cold brittleness, which makes it an ideal material for low-temperature containers, storage tanks and other equipment.
Generally, Ti 6Al-4V can be heat treated to increase its strength. It can be used in welded structures at operating temperatures up to 600° F. This alloy offers high strength, light weight, useful formability and high corrosion resistance.
The availability of Ti 6AI-4V makes it an optimal alloy for several industries such as aerospace, medical, marine and chemical processing industries.
